What the Ancient Lands are
The Ancient Lands are a realm of floating islands above Albion, added with the Dragonfire update on 31 August 2026. You reach them through portals that open in the open world, fight Ashborn mobs and Drakes, collect loot, and decide when to leave. Other groups are in the same instance, so every run is PvPvE: the mobs are only half the danger.
Players often call it an extraction mode. What you carry is only safe once you walk out through a portal. Stay longer and you can earn more, but you also give other groups more time to find you.
Dragonfire added more than the Ancient Lands: dragon attack world events, the 20-player Dragon Sanctuary raid against Azaryon the Fire Dragon, the Dragonslayer armor, the Firewing Drake mount, Lifeward Potions and new food. Many of the materials for these come from the Ancient Lands.
Portals: where to find them and how big they are
Portals spawn a few times a day across the open world. Since Patch 1 they are always shown on the World Map, so open it and look for the nearest one instead of riding around.
There are three portal sizes, each with its own matchmaking pool. Pick the one that fits your group, because you will meet groups of similar size inside.
| Portal | Group size | Timing after Patch 1 (8 Sep 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Small | Solo or a small group, up to about 5 | Locked for 15 min (was 30), then open to enter for 8 min (was 3) |
| Medium | Mid-size groups, about 5 to 7 | Open to enter for 5 min after it unlocks |
| Large | Large groups, up to 20 | Open to enter for 5 min after it unlocks; lasts 60 min (was 45) |
Orange and black rules: what you can lose
The Ancient Lands come in two rule sets, decided by where the portal stands. Portals in the safer royal zones lead to the orange version. Portals in red zones and the Outlands lead to the black version.
- Orange: if you are killed you lose the loot in your inventory, but you keep your equipped gear. Items you brought in are locked.
- Black: full loot. If you die you lose your gear and everything you carry.
- Item Power soft cap 1200. Item Power above 1200 counts at 20% in orange and 35% in black, so overgearing gives little back, especially in orange.
- Bleedout: when you run out of health you go down instead of dying at once, and an ally can revive you within a time window. Revived players get a debuff, and a solo player has much less time to recover.
- Healing is reduced inside the Ancient Lands, so bring more healing than you would for a normal dungeon.
- Leaving: when you exit you get a short period of invisibility to get away from portal campers. Interacting with anything ends it.
Islands, Keystones and Leygates
Each group starts on its own outer island. Every island has a quest. Since Patch 1 the quest is to kill 50% of the island's mobs (before, you needed an amount of fame). Drake islands also ask you to kill the Drake.
Finishing the quest gives you a Leygate Keystone. Place it at a Leygate to open the route to the next island. Routes are shared, so other groups can use a gate you opened, and both an active gate and a player carrying a Keystone are visible to everyone.
There are four Drake islands, and each Drake is a target every group can see. Once all four are cleared, a Fire Drake spawns in the center of the map. That is the biggest fight of the run and the place where groups are most likely to clash.
Patch 1 also gave regular mobs in large portals 50% less health. Drakes kept their health.
Spirit Essence
Spirit Essence is a stacking buff that only works inside the Ancient Lands. Each stack raises the fame you earn and makes you stronger against mobs. You get it from Dragon Statues, from killing mobs (much more from Drakes and champions than from trash) and from killing players.
Essence is lost when you leave, and if you die in PvP you lose all of it while your killer takes a share. That makes a group with a full stack a tempting target. Build your stack before the Drake fights, and think about whether the next island is worth the risk.
Your first Ancient Lands run, step by step
- 1
Find a portal
Open the World Map and pick the nearest portal. For a first run choose an orange one in a royal zone, so a loss costs your loot and not your gear.
- 2
Choose the right size
Go Small alone or with a few friends, Medium with a mid-size group and Large only with a full group of up to 20.
- 3
Gear sensibly
Aim near the 1200 Item Power soft cap instead of far above it. Bring healing, food and a potion, and expect healing received to be lower than usual.
- 4
Clear your island
Kill half of the island's mobs to finish the quest and get the Leygate Keystone. Keep your group close while someone carries it, since it shows your position.
- 5
Open the next Leygate
Place the Keystone and move on. Collect Spirit Essence from statues and mobs as you go.
- 6
Take a Drake
Fight a Drake with a tank holding its attention and its back turned away from the group, so its large attacks hit fewer people.
- 7
Extract on time
Leave through your entry portal or another group's portal while your loot is still worth keeping. Use the short invisibility on exit to get clear.
Rewards and what to do with them
Treasure chests sit at keeper camps, on Drake islands, in the center and at the Fire Drake. Beyond the usual loot, the Ancient Lands are the source of the new Dragonfire materials.
- Waystone Fragments (Master's, Grandmaster's and Elder's): combine matching fragments into a waystone that opens the Dragon Sanctuary raid. Waystones can be traded.
- Dragon Blood in three grades (Diluted, normal and Potent): used for Lifeward Potions, which protect nearby allies from a fatal blow.
- Drake crafting materials for the Dragonslayer Hood, Jacket and Shoes, a new leather set.
- Leyfin, a fish caught only in the Ancient Lands: Carefree Leyfin, Brightsoul Leyfin and Dragonbound Leyfin. They are cooked into Leyfin Omelettes.
- Firewing Drake Egg, a rare drop from Azaryon in the Dragon Sanctuary; early guides also list it among Dragon Attack rewards. Raised in a Kennel it grows into a Tame Firewing Drake in 668 hours (27 days 20 hours) and becomes the Firewing Drake mount, which glides through roots and slows and breathes fire. The egg can also be cooked into Drake Egg Biscuits.
- Draconic Insight, a vanity progression that unlocks cosmetics as you rank up.
