How flipping works in Albion Online
Flipping means buying an item for less than you can sell it for. Albion has no global auction house. Fort Sterling, Lymhurst, Bridgewatch, Martlock, Thetford, Caerleon and Brecilien each run a separate market, and goods move between them only when players carry them. The market is split into many small ones, so price gaps open all the time.
There are two kinds of flip. A same-city flip buys low and sells high in one market, using orders. A cross-city flip buys in one city and sells in another, so you also carry the goods. Selling gear to the Black Market in Caerleon is a third kind with its own rules, covered in the Black Market flipping guide.
Each gear line is usually cheapest in the city with the crafting bonus for it, because that is where crafters make and sell it. Lymhurst has the bonus for swords and bows, Martlock for axes and quarterstaffs, Bridgewatch for crossbows and daggers, Fort Sterling for hammers and spears, and Thetford for maces and fire staffs.
Market tax and setup fee
Every sale pays sales tax: 8% without Premium and 4% with it. Each buy order or sell order you place also costs a 2.5% setup fee. Filling someone else’s order instantly has no setup fee, but the seller still pays the tax.
A full flip with a buy order and a sell order pays both setup fees and the tax:
- With Premium, a flip needs a gross spread above about 10% before it leaves real profit.
- Without Premium, it needs a spread above about 15%.
- Changing the price of an order charges a setup fee again, so constant re-pricing eats your margin.
- Example: a buy order filled at 10,000 costs you 10,250 with the setup fee. A sell order at 11,500 brings back about 10,750 with Premium, a profit of about 500. Without Premium it brings back about 10,290, a profit of about 40.
| Account | Buy order setup | Sell order setup | Sales tax | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Premium | 2.5% | 2.5% | 4% | about 9% |
| No Premium | 2.5% | 2.5% | 8% | about 13% |
Instant buy, buy order, instant sell and sell order
Most same-city flips use a buy order and a sell order: the gap between the highest bid and the lowest ask is your margin. Instant buy to instant sell works only where the gap is wide, which mostly happens between cities or at the Black Market.
- Instant buy: you take the cheapest sell order right away. Fast, but you pay the highest price.
- Buy order: you bid below the market and wait for someone to sell to you. Cheaper, but slow, it costs the 2.5% setup fee, and other traders can outbid you.
- Instant sell: you fill the highest buy order. You pay only the sales tax, but you get the lowest price.
- Sell order: you list above the highest bid and wait. You pay the setup fee plus tax, and other sellers can undercut you.
| Buy with | Sell with | Margin | Speed and risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buy order | Sell order | Biggest | Slowest; most exposed to undercutting |
| Instant buy | Instant sell | Smallest | Fastest; needs a wide gap |
| Buy order | Instant sell | Medium | Medium |
| Instant buy | Sell order | Medium | Medium |
How to flip in one city, step by step
- 1
Pick items you know
Start with items that sell every day and that you understand: popular PvP and PvE gear, food, potions and refined materials.
- 2
Check the spread and the volume
Compare the highest buy order with the lowest sell order. Click the item’s picture in the market to see its estimated value and recent sales, and check how many sell per day.
- 3
Subtract the fees
Take off about 9% with Premium or about 13% without it. Go ahead only if real profit is left.
- 4
Place a buy order
Bid slightly above the current top buy order. If someone outbids you, raise by a clear step instead of 1 silver. Tiny raises invite bidding wars, and each edit costs the setup fee again.
- 5
List a sell order
When the buy order fills, list the item just under the lowest sell order.
- 6
Check back
Look at your orders a few times a day. Accept that some flips fail, and move on instead of chasing them with endless edits.
Flipping between cities
Cross-city flips use the gaps between markets. Buy where an item is cheap, carry it, and sell where it costs more. They need more planning than same-city flips, but the gaps are often wider.
- Compare the exact same item: tier, enchantment and quality must all match.
- Note how old each price is. Prices on price tools can be minutes or hours old, so confirm the price in game before you buy.
- Count travel time, your mount and the risk of losing the load.
- Routes between royal cities stay in blue and yellow zones, so ganks there are rare.
- Buy only as much as the target city sells in a day or two. A big load pushes the price down when you dump it, and the extra stock can sit for days.
What to flip
Volume beats margin. A small spread on an item that sells every day earns more over a week than a huge spread on an item nobody buys. Before you commit silver, check the sales history and make sure the item really moves.
- Good choices: meta gear and regear sets, food and potions, and refined materials. Guilds and players use them up constantly.
- Be careful with low tiers: their prices jump around and orders vanish fast.
- Be careful with highly enchanted items: they can take weeks to sell.
- Other traders see the same price tools, so the most obvious flips close quickly. Items that need patience with orders often hold their margin longer.
Starting silver and common mistakes
There is no minimum. A bankroll of a few million lets you spread silver across several items, so one failed flip does not stop you. Many traders keep about 1M silver in reserve and never put everything into orders at once.
Orders last 30 days. If a buy order never fills, the silver comes back to you after that. Unsold items from an expired sell order go to your completed transactions in the market.
- Counting profit before tax and setup fees.
- Locking all your silver in slow orders.
- Trusting old price data, or buying the wrong tier, enchantment or quality.
- Getting into 1-silver undercut wars and paying the setup fee on every edit.
- Chasing a huge spread on an item with no volume.
- Carrying more than you can afford to lose through red or black zones.
