Albion Online Refining Guide for Beginners 2026

Start refining in Albion Online: pick a resource and tier, refine in the right city, use focus well and plan a first session that makes silver.

What refining is

Refining turns raw resources into the materials crafters use. Ore becomes metal bars, logs become planks, fiber becomes cloth, hide becomes leather and stone becomes stone blocks. Every crafted item in Albion starts with refined materials, so there is always demand for them.

From tier 3 up, each refined item needs raw resources of its tier plus one refined item of the tier below. A Titanium Steel Bar (T5) takes 3 Titanium Ore and 1 Steel Bar (T4). The same amounts apply to all five resource lines. Focus cost is the base value before any specialization.

Where to refine: the bonus cities

Each royal city gives +40% production bonus to one resource line on top of the base +18% every city has. Refining in the right city more than doubles your return rate compared with a random city. Caerleon and Brecilien have only the base bonus for refining.

  • Some days a city gets an extra +10% or +20% production bonus for certain crafting or refining categories. The activities menu in game shows which ones. When it lands on your line, refine more that day.
  • If you refine more than one line later, refine each one in its own bonus city.

Choose your resource and tier

Pick one resource line and stay with it. Refining specialization lives on the Destiny Board, and each line levels separately. Spreading your effort over five lines keeps all of them weak.

A good first choice is the line whose bonus city you can reach easily and whose refined product sells well on your server. Metal bars, planks, cloth and leather are used in almost every crafted item. Stone blocks are used less, and above T4 raw stone sometimes sells for more than the blocks it makes, so check prices before choosing stone.

For tier, T4 and T5 are cheap to learn on and forgiving if you make a mistake, but many players refine them, so margins can be thin. Higher tiers often have wider margins and need more silver and spec. Guides disagree on which tiers pay best, because it depends on today's prices. The refining calculator on AOScout runs your setup for every tier and enchantment and highlights the best one.

Enchanted resources (.1 to .4) start at T4. To refine them you need enchanted raw resources plus the lower-tier refined item at the same enchantment. T4 is the exception: enchanted T4 uses a plain T3 refined item. Leave enchanted refining until you are comfortable with flat tiers.

Where to buy raw resources

  • Buy in the bonus city itself when the price is fair. Hauling raw resources from another city is heavy work, and refining in the bonus city almost always beats any saving on raw prices.
  • Place buy orders instead of buying instantly. You pay a 2.5% setup fee on the order but usually get a lower price. Put orders up before you log off and collect the next day.
  • Decide whether to buy the lower-tier refined item or make it. Refining a chain (T3, then T4, then T5) gives you your own inputs and uses your returns.
  • Gather some raws yourself if you like gathering. A gatherer backpack in the cape slot cuts the weight of its raw resource by 30% (only for resources up to the backpack's own tier), which helps when you carry it to the bonus city.
  • Compare cities on the item price pages before a big buy. Prices on our servers can be a few hours old, so confirm in game.

Focus basics

Focus is a resource you get with Premium: up to 10,000 points per day, stored up to 30,000. Spending focus on a refine adds +59% production bonus, which raises the return rate from about 37% to about 54% in a bonus city.

Each refine costs focus, and the cost grows fast with tier and enchantment: 54 for a flat T4 item, 94 for T5 and 503 for T8 before spec. Specialization on the Destiny Board lowers that cost a lot: every 10,000 points of focus cost efficiency halve it. Spec does not raise your return rate. It lets the same daily focus cover many more refines.

  • Spend your focus every day. Once you hit 30,000, new focus is wasted.
  • Put focus on the refine that earns the most silver per focus point, usually your best-specced line.
  • Without Premium, refine without focus in the bonus city. 37% is still a solid return.

Your first refining session step by step

  1. 1

    Pick one line and tier

For example, ore into Steel Bars (T4) in Thetford. Check that the refined price is higher than raw plus lower-tier cost after returns.

  2. 2

    Go to the bonus city

Do all buying and refining there. Travel with an empty inventory so fast travel is free.

  3. 3

    Buy the inputs

Place buy orders for the raw resource and the lower-tier refined item, or buy instantly if the prices are good. Buy enough for one session, not your whole bank.

  4. 4

    Check the station fee

Stations charge silver per 100 nutrition, set by the owner. Pick a station with a reasonable fee; a few hundred silver is common in royal cities.

  5. 5

    Refine

Turn focus on if you have Premium and use it on this line. Refine everything you bought.

  6. 6

    Refine the returns

Returned materials go back into the station. Repeat until you no longer have a full set of inputs.

  7. 7

    Sell or keep

Sell the refined items into buy orders for quick silver, or list sell orders for more. Keep them if you craft.

  8. 8

    Check your result

Compare what you earned with what you spent, including tax and fees. If the line did not pay, try another tier next time.

Hidden costs and common mistakes

Your real cost per refined item is the raw resources plus the lower-tier item, minus what the return rate gives back, plus the station fee. On the sale side you pay 4% sales tax with Premium or 8% without, plus a 2.5% setup fee if you list a sell order.

  • Refining in the wrong city and losing the +40% bonus.
  • Forgetting the lower-tier refined input when you work out the cost.
  • Ignoring the station fee and market tax.
  • Thinking spec raises the return rate. It only lowers focus cost.
  • Letting focus sit at the 30,000 cap.
  • Refining stone or another line where the raw sells for more than the refined product.
  • Levelling several resource lines at once.
  • Buying a huge stack of inputs before testing one small batch.

Questions players ask

Is refining profitable in Albion Online?

It can be, mostly thanks to the return rate in bonus cities and focus. Margins change with prices, so check today's numbers before every big batch.

Which city is best for refining?

Thetford for ore, Lymhurst for fiber, Martlock for hide, Bridgewatch for stone and Fort Sterling for wood. Each gives +40% production bonus to its resource.

What is the refining return rate with focus?

About 54% in the resource's bonus city with focus, about 37% in the bonus city without focus, and about 15% in other royal cities without focus. Daily city bonuses add more.

How much focus do I get?

Premium gives up to 10,000 focus per day, and you can store up to 30,000. Spec lowers the focus each refine costs.

Which tier should a beginner refine?

T4 and T5 are cheap to learn on. Higher tiers can pay more but need more silver and spec. Compare tiers with today's prices.

Should I sell raw or refined resources?

Refine when the refined price beats raw plus lower-tier cost after the return rate, station fee and tax. For some lines, such as stone above T4, raw can sell for more.

How do I refine enchanted resources?

Use enchanted raw resources plus the lower-tier refined item at the same enchantment. Enchanted T4 is the exception and uses a plain T3 refined item.

Does refining spec increase return rate?

No. Spec lowers the focus cost of each refine, so your daily focus covers more items. The return rate depends on city, focus and daily bonuses.
